Etymology

From Old Khmer ផ្នូស (phnūsa), ផ្នូស្ស (phnūssa), ផ្នួស (phnwsa), Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ប្នោស៑ (pnos), or Angkorian Old Khmer ផ្ន្វស៑ (phnvas), ផ្នោស៑ (phnos), ប្នោស៑ (pnos, to be in holy orders; holy orders), extended forms of បោស៑ (pos), ប្វាស៑ (pvās), ប្វស៑ (pvas), from which Thai บวช (bùuat) was derived. The final is also changed to ช to correspond Pali pabbajjā. Cognate with Modern Khmer ផ្នួស (phnuəh).
