Etymology
From Proto-Tai *pɯwᴮ (“paternal grandfather”). Cognate with Lao ປູ່ (pū), Lü ᦔᦴᧈ (ṗuu¹), Shan ပူႇ (pùu), Ahom 𑜆𑜥 (pū), Bouyei baus, Nong Zhuang buq. Compare Proto-Hlai *pʰuːʔ (“grandfather; ancestor”), Proto-Austronesian *apu (“grandparent; grandchild”) (whence Hiligaynon apo, Tagalog apo).
