From นคร (ná-kɔɔn, “city”) + ราช (râat, “royal”) + สีมา (sǐi-maa, “border; boundary”); literally "city [which is a] royal border [of the Ayutthaya Kingdom]"; believed to have been adapted from the names of the two ancient city-states located in the area, โคราช (koo-râat) and เสมา (sěe-maa).
