From Old Khmer ថ្វាយ (thvāya), ថ្វាយ៑ (thvāy), តវាយ (tâvāya), ត្វាយ៑ (tvāy), ថ្វៃ (thvai, to make an offering, present, or make a gift (to gods, royalty, etc)); or from Old Mon တွာဲ (twāy, to present (to a king)). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨳ᩠ᩅ᩻ᩣ᩠ᨿ, Modern Khmer ថ្វាយ (thvaay). Extended as Thai ดงวาย, ตังวาย.
