From Proto-Southwestern Tai *tanᴬ¹ (solid; blocked; not hollow). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩢ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨲᩢ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຕັນ (tan), ᦶᦎᧃ (ṫaen), Shan တၼ် (tǎn), Tai Nüa ᥖᥢ (tan), Ahom 𑜄𑜃𑜫 (tan, to fill a hole).
