Etymology
From Old Khmer tralēṅa kēṅa (“four-sided; four-faced”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ត្រឡែងកែង (trɑlaeng kaeng, “four-sided, four-face; intersection, crossroads, confluence (of rivers); four-sided structure”).
The last sense was from the fact that the execution of criminals was traditionally held at a crossroads.
