From Proto-Tai *toːᴬ (“stump (of a tree)”), from Old Chinese 株 (OC *to, “stump”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨲᩬᩴ, Lao ຕໍ (tǭ) or ກະຕໍ (ka tǭ), Shan တေႃ (tǎu), Phake တေႃ (tō), Ahom 𑜄𑜦𑜡 (tō).
