Inherited from Proto-Tai *ɗuəŋꟲ (coconut grub). Compare Middle Chinese (MC drjuwng, “insect; bug”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯ᩠ᩅ᩶ᨦ, Lao ດ້ວງ (dūang), ᦷᦡᧂᧉ (ḋong²), Zhuang nduengj (grub). Also compare Vietnamese đuông and Khmer ដួង (duəng).
