From Proto-Tai *ɟoːŋᴮ (crack; hole). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨩᩬ᩵ᨦ, Khün ᨩᩬ᩵ᨦ, Isan ซ่อง, Lao ຊ່ອງ (sǭng), ᦋᦸᧂᧈ (tsoang¹), Tai Dón ꪋꪮꪉꫀ, Shan ၸွင်ႈ (tsāung), Ahom 𑜋𑜨𑜂𑜫 (choṅ), Zhuang congh. Possibly related to ซ่อง (sɔ̂ng).
