From Proto-Tai *ɣaːwᴬ (“fishy”). Cognate with Lao ຄາວ (khāo), Lü ᦆᦱᧁ (xaaw), Shan ၶႅဝ်း (khéao), Tai Nüa ᥑᥦᥝᥰ (xäew) or ᥔᥦᥝᥰ (säew), Saek กฺ๊าว. Compare Proto-Hlai *kʰaːw (“smelly”).
