From Proto-Tai *ɣaːwᴬ (fishy). Cognate with Lao ຄາວ (khāo), ᦆᦱᧁ (xaaw), Shan ၶႅဝ်း (khéao), Tai Nüa ᥑᥦᥝᥰ (xäew) or ᥔᥦᥝᥰ (säew), Saek กฺ๊าว. Compare Proto-Hlai *kʰaːw (smelly).
