From Proto-Tai *kaːŋꟲ (“fishbone”), from Middle Chinese 鯁 (MC kaengX, “fishbone”). Cognate with Lao ກ້າງ (kāng), Tai Nüa ᥐᥣᥒᥲ (kàang), Northern Thai ᨠ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨦ, Shan ၵၢင်ႈ (kāang).
