From Proto-Tai *kwaːtᴰ (to sweep), from Old Chinese (OC *kroːd, “to wipe; to sweep”). Cognate with Lao ກວາດ (kuāt), Northern Thai ᨠ᩠ᩅᩣ᩠ᨯ, ᦦᦱᧆ (k̇waad), Tai Dón ꪀꪫꪱꪒ, Shan ၵႂၢတ်ႇ (kwàat), Ahom 𑜀𑜄𑜫 (kat). Possibly related to กราด (gràat) and คราด (krâat).
