From Sanskrit कपट (kapaṭa, “cheating; deceit; deception; fraud; etc”); perhaps via Old Khmer កបត (kapata, “to practice deception; to play false; to betray one's trust; to go back on one's word”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ក្បត់ (kbɑt, “to betray; to deceive”).
