Etymology

Ultimately derived from Proto-Dravidian *mentti, cognate with Telugu మెంతులు (mentulu), Kannada ಮೆಂತೆ (mente), Tulu ಮೆತ್ತೆ (mette). Compare Sanskrit मेथिका (methikā), whence Hindi मेथी (methī) and Marathi मेथी (methī), a Dravidian borrowing.
