Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *kiḷi (“parrot”). Cognate with Kannada ಗಿಳಿ (giḷi, “parrot”), Kodava ಗ್ಣಿ (gŭni, “parrot”), Kolami సిల్క (silka, “parrot”), Tamil கிளி (kiḷi, “parrot”), Tulu ಗಿಳಿ (giḷi, “parrot”), Telugu చిలుక (ciluka, “parrot”) and Sanskrit कीर (kīra, “parrot”). Underwent semantic shift to mean "any small bird" in Malayalam.
