Etymology

From കെട്ടുക (keṭṭuka, to tie, bind), referring to the rope like material webbed over the wooden frame to lie on. Cognate with Tamil கட்டில் (kaṭṭil) and Sanskrit खट्वा (khaṭvā), a Dravidian borrowing. Doublet of ഖട്വ (khaṭva), borrowed from Sanskrit.
