Etymology
From Old Kannada ಕೊಟ್ಟಗೆ (koṭṭage), from late Proto-Tamil-Kannada *koṭṭakay, borrowed from Middle Indo-Aryan *goṭṭʰaka, itself from a derivative of Sanskrit गोष्ठ (goṣṭhá, “cowshed”). Cognate with Tamil கொட்டகை (koṭṭakai), கொட்டகம் (koṭṭakam) and Malayalam കൊട്ടക (koṭṭaka).
