   ಆತನು ನನ್ನ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದನು ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

   ātanu nanna rāṣṭrakke bandiddanu ādare nannannu nōḍalikke baralilla.

   He came to my state, but he did not come to see me.

"ಆದರೆ" is not used quite as frequently as English "but"; a construction with the conditional verb form and the inclusive suffix "-ಊ" is preferred ("ಆತನು ನನ್ನ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರೂ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ"). "ಆದರೆ," like other conjunctions such as "ಮತ್ತು" and "ಇಲ್ಲವೇ," is often used at the beginning of a sentence, where it may be considered in effect to be an adverb. "ಆದರೆ" actually derives from the conditional verb form of "ಆಗು" ("to happen"), so this is perfectly grammatical.
