Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *pakal (“daylight”), cognate with Tamil பகல் (pakal, “day, daytime”), பகலவன் (pakalavaṉ), பகலோன் (pakalōṉ, “sun”), பகர் (pakar, “to radiate light”), பகரம் (pakaram, “brightness, splendour”), Kannada ಹಗಲು (hagalu, “daytime, day”) and Malayalam പകൽ (pakal).
