(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) Cognate with Kannada ನೆಮ್ಮದಿ (nemmadi), Tamil நிம்மதி (nimmati), நய (naya, “to desire greatly”).[1] Probably not a compound of నెర (nera) + మది (madi, “mind”), despite Brown.
