From Proto-Dravidian *aṇṇa (“elder brother”). Cognate with Tamil அண்ணா (aṇṇā), or அண்ணன் (aṇṇaṉ), Kannada ಅಣ್ಣ (aṇṇa), Sholaga ಅಣ್ಣ (aṇṇa), Tulu ಅಣ್ಣೆ (aṇṇe), or ಅನ್ನೆ (anne), Malayalam അണ്ണ (aṇṇa), or അണ്ണൻ (aṇṇaṉ).
