Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *miḷVku. From மிள- (miḷa-, pepper) + காய் (kāy, unripe fruit). Cognate with Telugu మిరపకాయ (mirapakāya). மிள- (miḷa-) is not used by itself; rather, it is found as part of some nouns meaning "pepper".
