From Tamil கட்டிடம் (kaṭṭiṭam), a variant of கட்டடம் (kaṭṭaṭam, “building, constructing, binding”). Ultimately derived from Tamil கட்டு (kaṭṭu, “to tie, bind, fasten, build, erect”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
