Inherited from Old Tamil 𑀇𑀮𑁆 (il), from Proto-Dravidian *il. Cognate with Telugu ఇల్లు (illu, “house”), Malayalam ഇൽ (il, “house, place”), Kodava ಇಲ್ಲವೇನ್ (illavēn, “man who is a relative”), Tulu ಇಲ್ಲ್ (illŭ, “house, dwelling, family”), Kolami ఎల్ల (ella, “house”), Gondi ଇଲ୍ଲୁ (illu).
