Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀻 (vijjulī), 𑀯𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀼𑀮𑀺𑀆 (vijjuliā), from Sanskrit विद्युल्लता (vidyullatā, forked lightning), from विद्युत् (vidyut, lightning) + लता (latā, creeper, vine, liana); regarding the semantics, the shape of the lightning can be compared to that of a creeper.[1][2] Doublet of વિદ્યુત (vidyut). Cognate with Assamese বিজুলী (bizuli), Hindustani بجلی / बिजली (bijlī), Nepali बिजुली (bijulī), Odia ବିଜୁଳି (bijuḷi), Punjabi ਬਿਜਲੀ (bijlī).
