Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀸𑀭 (bāra) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit द्वार (dvā́ra, “door”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dwā́ram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰwā́ram, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰworom (“enclosure, courtyard, i.e. something enclosed by the door”), accusative of *dʰwer-.[1] Doublet of દાર (dār), દ્વાર (dvār), and બારણું (bārṇũ).
