Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀬 (pŏtthaya) or 𑀧𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀬 (putthaya), from Sanskrit पवस्त (pavasta, “covering”) and Sanskrit पुस्तक (pustaka, “book”), from Middle Iranian (Compare Classical Persian پوست (pōst) → પોસ્ત (post)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pawástam (“covering, envelope”). Doublet of પુસ્તક (pustak). Cognate with Bengali পোথা (pōtha), Hindi पोथा (pothā), Marathi पोथी (pothī), Nepali पोथि (pothi), Punjabi ਪੋਥਾ (pothā).
