Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀮𑀡 (jalaṇa), from Sanskrit ज्वलन (jvalaná). Cognate with Hindustani جلن / जलन (jalan, “burning feeling”), Marathi जळण (jaḷaṇ), Rajasthani जळण (jaḷaṇ).
