Inherited from Sanskrit *कथावार्त्ता (kathāvārttā), from कथा (kathā) + वार्त्ता (vārttā). The phoneme /ɛ/ originating from કહેવું (kahevũ), which derives from the same root as कथा (kathā), कथ् (kath). Cognate with Hindustani کَہاوَت / कहावत (kahāvat) and Rajasthani कैवत (kaivat).
