Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑁄𑀇𑀮 (koila, “black cuckoo; *coal”) (compare 𑀓𑁄𑀇𑀮𑀸 (koilā, “coal”)) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit कोकिल (kokila).
