Inherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑀮𑀺𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀸 (haliddā), 𑀳𑀮𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀸 (haladdā) (and Sanskrit हलदी (haladī) for the variant), from Sanskrit हरिद्रा (haridrā, “turmeric”), from the root हरि (hari, “yellow, green”). Doublet of হরিয়াল (horiẏal, “green pigeon”), হরিণ (horin, “deer”), and হিরণ (hiron, “gold”).
