Derived from Sanskrit *से (se), from (sa, 1st-case singular pronoun) + (i, demonstrative), from Proto-Indo-European * and *h₁i, respectively. Cognate with Assamese সি (xi), Odia ସେ (se) and Maithili 𑂮𑂵 (se). Overwhelmingly replaced the synonymous terms তা (ta) and তে (te).
