Inherited from Middle Bengali শেওলি (śeōli), from Old Bengali শেঅলি (śeali), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀰𑁂𑀳𑀸𑀮𑀺 (śehāli) with loss of aspiration and vowel length distinction, from Sanskrit शेफालिक (śephālika), from शेफाल (śephāla). Cognate with Assamese শেৱালি (xewali), Odia ସିଆଳି (siaḷi), Odia ସିଆରି (siari), Sinhalese සේපාලිකා (sēpālikā), Burmese ဆိပ်ဖလူး (hciphpa.lu:). Doublet of শেফালি (śephali).
