Etymology

Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit রত্ন (ratna). Doublet of রত্ন (rotno). Compare Hindustani رتن‎ / रतन (ratan), and also Burmese ရတနာ (ra.ta.na) and Thai รัตนะ (rát-dtà-ná).
