Etymology

From মেদিনী (medinī), from Middle Bengali মাদানী (madani, Medinan) which is ultimately from Arabic مَدَنِيّ (madaniyy), + পুর (pur, city), from Sanskrit पुर (pura). Named after the 17th-century scholar Haji Mustafa Madani.[1]
