Etymology

Inherited from Old Bengali পোখিরী (pokhirī), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀭 (pokkhara, lotus pond) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇- (-i-), from Sanskrit पौष्कर (pauṣkara), vriddhi of पुष्कर (puṣkara, blue lotus), from the root पुष् (puṣ, to thrive). Cognate with Early Assamese পোখৰী (pökhorī).
