Etymology
Inherited from Old Bengali পোখিরী (pokhirī), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀭 (pokkhara, “lotus pond”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇- (-i-), from Sanskrit पौष्कर (pauṣkara), vriddhi of पुष्कर (puṣkara, “blue lotus”), from the root पुष् (puṣ, “to thrive”). Cognate with Early Assamese পোখৰী (pökhorī).
