Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (piṭṭha), from Sanskrit पृष्ठ (pṛṣṭha), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pr̥štʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥-sth₂-ós (literally “that which is standing before (in one's view)”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠙꠤꠑ (fiṭó), Rohingya fith, Assamese পিঠি (pithi), Hindustani پیٹھ / पीठ (pīṭh), Punjabi ਪਿੱਠ (piṭṭha), Sinhalese පිට (piṭa).
