From Classical Persian تیغ‎ (tēğ, “blade, sword”), possibly from Middle Persian [script needed] (tyh /⁠tēx⁠/, “sharp edge, ridge”). Cognate with Old Armenian տէգ (tēg) and Turkish tiğ.
