Etymology
Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀠𑁂𑀯 (*ḍheva, “lump, heap, swelling”), from a substrate which is also the source of *𑀠𑀺𑀩𑁆𑀩 (*ḍhibba), *𑀠𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*ḍhippa), *𑀠𑁂𑀧𑁆𑀧 (*ḍheppa), whence also ঢিবি (ḍhibi), ঢিপি (ḍhipi), and ঢেপা (ḍhepa) respectively. Cognate with Assamese ঢৌ (dhou), Odia ଢେଉ (ḍheu), Punjabi ਢੇਇ (ḍhei).
