Learned borrowing from Sanskrit अलस (alasa, “lazy”), a corruption of अरस (arasa, “weak, unhappy”), composed of अ- (a-, negating prefix) + रस (rasa, “juice, pleasure”). Doublet of রস (ros, “sweet juice or liquid”), রসাল (rośal, “succulent, entertaining”), রসি (rośi, “sugarcane juice, serum”), রসুই (rośui, “kitchen, cooking”), রসায়ন (rośaẏon, “chemistry, body fluid vessels”), and রসান (rośan, “metal-polishing stone”).
