From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mey- (to laugh, be glad). Cognate with Ancient Greek μειδᾰ́ω (meidáō, smile), Proto-Slavic *smьjàti (to laugh), Latin mīrus (wonderful) the source of English admire etc.; Latvian smieties (laugh); English smile and possibly smirk.
