Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀲𑀢𑁂𑀭 (*satera), borrowed from Middle Persian [script needed] (styl /⁠stēr⁠/), borrowed from Ancient Greek στατήρ (statḗr, “unit of weight; a stater”). Cognate to Khotanese [script needed] (satīra), [script needed] (sera), Gandhari 𐨯𐨟𐨅𐨪 (satera).
