Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀲𑀼𑀡𑁆𑀡𑀲𑀸𑀡 (*suṇṇasāṇa), from Sanskrit शून्यस्थान n (śūnyasthāna, “empty place”), from शून्य (śūnya, “empty”) + स्थान (sthāna, “place”).
