Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyk- (belt, strap). Cognate with Lithuanian šikšnà; also compare Finnish hihna, a Baltic borrowing. By surface analysis, शिक् (śik) + -य (-ya).

      yāni teʼntaḥ śikyānyābedhū raṇyāya kam.
      pra te tāni cṛtāmasi śivā mānasya patnī na uddhitā tanve bhava.
      We loosen the loops which men have bound within thee, to tie and hold.
