From Proto-Indo-Aryan *uHyáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *uHyáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *uh₁y-éye-ti, the zero-grade causative of *weh₁y- (to weave). Cognate with Latin vieō (to twist, plait, weave), Russian вить (vitʹ, to wind, twist, weave).
