Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *wŕ̥ṣā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wŕ̥šā, from Proto-Indo-European *wŕ̥sēn (“male, manly”).
Cognate with Ancient Greek ἄρσην (ársēn, “male”), Middle Persian [script needed] (aršan), Old Armenian առն (aṙn, “ram”). Related to ऋषभ (ṛṣabhá, “bull”).
