From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáṣṭi, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wášti, from Proto-Indo-European *wéḱ-ti, from *weḱ- (“to wish, want”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬱𐬙𐬍 (vaštī), Old Persian 𐎺𐏁𐎴 (vašna, “will, favor”).
