From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wáHyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wáHyati, from Proto-Indo-European *wéh₁y-e-ti, from *weh₁y- (“to weave”). Cognate with Latin vieō (“to twist, plait, weave”), Russian вить (vitʹ, “to wind, twist, weave”).
