Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀁𑀟𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓 (maṃḍukka), from Sanskrit मण्डूक (maṇḍū́ka).[1] Turner attributes the variety of New Indo-Aryan forms to taboo formations.
