Probably desiderative of मिश् (miś). From Proto-Indo-European *meyḱ- (to mix). Cognate with Ancient Greek μίγνυμι (mígnumi, to mix), Proto-Slavic *mě̄sìti, Lithuanian mišti and maišyti (to mix); Latin misceō whence English mixture, miscellaneous; English mix, mash.
